Once in awhile, we are introduced to opportunities that feel completely out of left field. They aren’t opportunities we pray for or dream about. They aren’t even opportunities we know exist. When they are presented to us, we are knocked off kilter. Our initial reaction might be a simple “no”. Or we might entertain the thought for a short time and then dismiss it. However, once in awhile God asks us to do something that uses our gifts and answers our prayers in packaging we don’t even recognize. Our prayers for fulfillment, purpose, or even an opportunity to financially support our families may look completely different than what we expected. It’s common to be afraid of exploring that package more. It may feel, look, and smell completely foreign and and we may not have the slightest clue how to use the parts and pieces inside. However, we feel God keeping us there saying, “This is what I have for you right now. I know you don’t know how to do this. I know you don’t want to do this. But, trust me. I have prepared you for such a time as this”.
This is where Kansas and I found ourselves in May, 2015. We knew without a doubt that God was calling us to become health and wellness coaches with a company called Beachbody. Seriously, Beachbody? The name in itself was a bit of a turn off for us both. What in the world was this going to look like? How would we find the time, or even the courage to follow Him down this path that was so cluttered with questions and “what-if’s” that we could hardly see more than a foot or two in front of us?
Kansas was a busy mom to four sweet kiddos at the time and running an in-home daycare. She and her husband, Danny, were extremely involved in the life of their church and their home had a revolving front door which welcomed family and friends at any hour of any day. Kansas was brand new to her health and fitness journey, for the first time feeling like she was learning how to take control of her physical health, but hardly feeling equipped to lead and not knowing where in the world she would find the extra hours in her day to help others in their own health journeys. Why in the world would she take on one more thing? Because she knew God was preparing her for such a time as this.
I was just 3 months postpartum with our second kiddo, Jack. Between getting up almost hourly with him each night and trying to muster the energy to keep up with sweet two year old, Julia, I found myself in a fog. We had just moved into our home which was under renovation a week before Jack arrived after moving across the Midwest a few months prior. Tim was busy learning his new position at work and I was truly just trying to take a it all a day at a time. I found myself feeling quite lonely in our new community and praying for opportunities just to make a couple of new friends. However, for an introvert, this was a bit tricky and a newborn baby always made it easy to have an excuse just to stay home. Although health, wellness, and coaching had always been passions of mine, I couldn’t fathom putting myself out there on social media to share that with other people. Why would I choose to make myself vulnerable in that way? Because, I know God had prepared me for such a time as this.
To make a long story short, Kansas and I were randomly (but we all know God doesn’t do random) partnered up to coach our first Fit Team together. We didn’t know each other before this, we had no idea what was ahead, but after the first few days of planning for our group, we both knew our partnership was orchestrated by God and that He had prepared us “for a time such as this”. (Esther 4:14).
As Kansas and I started working together, we learned just how different we were. She is very type-A, incredibly organized, and just loves to put together documents and spreadsheets. I never thought I was unorganized or unprepared until I met her :). This girl has some incredible administrative gifts; an area I’m not so strong in. She is also very comfortable sharing her life with others via social media; something I shy away from. She’s a mover and a shaker; I’m a bit more cautious. I have a background in health and fitness and she hadn’t really ever picked up a dumbbell. Tough situations cause her to become a bit anxious and take action quickly, where I try to maintain a sense of calm and proceed a more slowly. We quickly found that these differences made us so much stronger as a pair, as opposed to individuals; and that’s what God’s plan was all along. Through our differences, we shared a vision and knew God was thus, Arise Wellness was born!
We want this to be a ministry that fosters confidence in our clients from the inside out. We want people to know that God calls us to be good stewards over the gifts He gives us, and this includes our bodies. We want Christ to be our priority and to seek Him in each area of this ministry; the way we coach our clients, our coaches, and the way in which we tell our story. We want our clients and coaches to know without a doubt that their identity is found in Him alone and go into each day with confidence knowing that because He lives in them, they can do anything Christ calls them to do!
Now, for the sake of complete transparency, we haven’t done this perfectly. Not even close. There are days we have chosen to spend time on social media over time with God. There have been times we have chosen work instead of family. But, God is faithful. He hasn’t left us, even during the times when we’ve leaned on our own understanding and not His. He has been gracious in gently aligning us once again with His will and we learn to surrender each step to Him. And, He has given our husbands and children an extra measure of grace in the process as we do our best to follow His leading with Arise Wellness, and has wives, mothers, and friends.
Our prayer as you visit this page, is that you first see Christ living in us. We want you to be met wherever you are in life, and feel supported and encouraged, regardless of whether or not you choose to participate in one of our AW Fit Teams. This will be a place where Kansas, myself, and Arise Wellness coaches share our joys, struggles, life lessons, and everyday moments in hopes that it will encourage you to be courageous and pursue Christ’s calling in your life. We can't wait for you to get to know our coaches individually because we wouldn't be able to grow our ministry without them. We need each other to fulfill our individual callings because building the Kingdom is a team effort. Ezra 10:4 says, “Arise, this matter is in your hands and we will support you. Take courage and do it.” Take courage, friends. If we can support you in your health journey, it would be a JOY! The Creator of the Universe has called you chosen and dearly loved, and He’s called you to a life of purpose because you are here for a time such as this. We look forward to sharing this journey with you!
